Artist Statement, by Linda Warner Constantino:

"One of my goals while teaching illustration at Savannah College of Art and Design for 20 years was to teach painting in Italy. I wrote this goal down every year for five years until it came true. I was an art history major in college and found Italian art from all periods resonated for me.

I actually found out about Spannocchia while looking for woodworking tools on the internet. One of the teachers profiled on the site taught at Spannocchia. I followed her link and I contacted Spannocchia and asked if I could teach a workshop there. They said yes! I came over on my Spring break in 2008. It was cold and rainy a lot of the time but I loved it! From then on, I taught a workshop each year, but soon aging elders and other obligations prevented me from continuing with the workshops. Then came Covid 19 and I retired. I knew I wanted to come back so I started the workshops back up again in 2023.
I like to paint small watercolors because it helps keep my style loose and expressive. I like the format of small sketchbooks because they are so portable and facilitate painting on site. Most of the paintings are 5" by 6" – close to the same size as the notecards. I think I have at least four sketchbooks and many paintings to fill them up. One of the things I love about plein air painting is the way it creates a connection with whatever view I am painting. I can remember the time of day and the weather and all I felt about a particular place. There is a term called "topophilia" which literally means "love of place." It is used to describe a strong emotional connection with a particular place or environment. This is how I feel about Spannocchia and this is why I will never tire of painting it.

I have been asked to sell paintings out of my sketchbook but it is important to me to keep the books in tact. The new notecards are my way of sharing my sketchbooks and my love for Spannocchia."
